How to Make Apple Betty with Almond Cream
Apple betty with almond cream is a popular treat in New York (though it can be eaten in any state). This recipe uses tart apples, cinnamon-raisin bread and is topped with heavy whipped cream that is accompanied with a lemony flavor. It's mystic blend of cinnamon, raisin and lemon flavors makes this treat a one of a kind!
3 pounds tart apples, peeled and sliced
10 slices cinnamon-raisin bread, cubed
3/4 cup packed brown sugar
1/2 cup melted butter, unsalted
1 tsp almond extract
1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
1/4 tsp ground cardamon
1/8 teaspoon salt
1 cup of heavy whipping cream
2 tablespoons sugar
1 teaspoon grated lemon peel
1/2 teaspoon of almond extract
Makes 8 servings
Gather all the ingredients.Granny Smith are commonly found and good for baking, so this apple can be used. If you can't find powdered cardamom, crush cardamom pods yourself with a mortar and pestle.
Place the tart apples in an ungreased 5 quart slow cooker.
Combine all the remaining apple betty ingredients in a large bowl.Spoon over the tart apples. Make sure there is an even layer over the apples tonsure it cooks evenly.
Cover and cook on low for three to four hours or until the apples are tender.
Beat the whipped cream in a small bowl until it begins to thicken. Add the sugar, lemon peel and extract; keep beating until soft peaks form. Serve with the tart apples.
