How to make kinetic sand
Kinetic Sand is one of the most popular toys on the market for children and their parents. He can take any form and at the same time stick only to himself. However, to acquire a sufficient amount of sand for the game you have to spend a large amount, since it is sold in small quantities and is expensive. So why not make it yourself, it will be cheaper!
Step 1: What is required
- 1 large bowl
- 1 Large pan
- 1 measuring cup
- 1 Measured tablespoon (as in the picture)
- 1 Measured teaspoon (as in the picture)
- Dishwashing liquid - you can use any brand (do not use liquid soap)
- 1 Water Mug
- Food coloring
- Corn starch (powdery)
- Sand - fit almost anyone. You can collect on the beach, in the park or buy at any local store.
Step 2: Bake the sand (calcining)
For this step, we need sand and a baking sheet. Place sand on a baking sheet and spread it evenly in a thin layer. The thickness of the sand layer should not be more than 2.5 cm. -5cm. In order to maximally evaporate water from the sand, we must get the maximum surface area.
Bake sand for 30 minutes at 50 ° C. Leave the oven door ajar as in the photo so that air can circulate freely during baking. Then remove the baking tray with sand from the oven and let it cool for about 20 minutes.
Note:If the sand sticks to the container during baking, it is recommended to mix it thoroughly.
Step 3: measure the amount of sand needed
After the calcined sand has cooled, take a measuring cup and fill it to the brim. Then pour it into a large bowl. If you want to make more than 1 cup of kinetic sand, then you only need to double or triple the amount of sand and all other ingredients, you need to keep all the ratios.
Step 4: Measuring the right amount of starch
Fill the scoop with corn starch to the brim and add the starch to the sandy bowl. Corn starch may not be very crumbly so do not worry if you can’t accurately measure the right amount.
After adding the cornstarch to the sand, mix everything well until you get a uniform mixture. To save time on washing another spoon, I used the same measuring spoon for mixing.
Now set aside a bowl of sand, we need it at the 6th stage.
Step 5: Colored Soapy Water
At this stage, we need two ingredients. With the help of the measuring cup that we used earlier for sand measure out the same amount of water and pour it into a glass or something like that. Then take the dishwashing detergent, fill it with a measuring teaspoon and pour it into a glass of water. Stir the solution with the same spoon. Then add a few drops of your favorite food coloring to this solution. The darker the color of the water, the richer the color of the kinetic sand! You also need to make sure that you use a dye that dissolves well in water. Again, take a spoon and carefully move everything to make sure that the water does not float clots of paint.
Step: 6 We combine everything together
At this stage we will put all our ingredients together. Take a bowl of sand and starch which was prepared at Step # 3 and a soapy solution prepared in Step # 5. Color soap solution before this step would be nice to mix again.
Slowly pour the soap solution into a cup of sand and starch. Our goal is to make the sand a bit wet. This means that it is not necessary to use all the water. Continue to add the solution and mix until all the sand is slightly damp. Break all the lumps that will start to form. By the end of this stage, you should get a homogeneous, slightly wet and fully colored mixture.
Note:As you can see, my sand turned out to be light green and was not as bright as I would like. In order not to repeat my mistake, add more food coloring during the preparation of the solution. You should get a very dark mixture. This will increase your chances of getting more attractive and vibrant kinetic sand!
Step 7: Hand Shake
At this stage, all you need is your hands. After all the remaining kinetic sand is thoroughly mixed, knead the sand with your hands, as if you were kneading ordinary dough. Stir until sand no longer sticks to hands. If he continues to stick to his hands, then maybe you added too much soap solution at Step # 5.To solve this problem, just add a little more sand or cornstarch!
Note:If you have added too much soap solution, you can add plain flour instead of sand or starch to thicken the sand. Flour can make it softer and less grainy to the touch.
Step 8: Test the sand
Sand can be checked in several ways. I checked my sand for the ability to keep shape and stick to myself. For this, I filled the sand tightly in a regular cup (you can use any shape) and turned it over! Everyone played in the sandbox in childhood? 🙂 Then I cut a piece of sand with a knife.
