I propose to consider in detail the manufacture of products in the technique of "ottomans" (aka "biscuit" or "bombon") on the example of creating a seat cover for a chair (stool). Here is the result of our master class:
What is required?
- Fabric-base, on which the ottomans will be sewn, depending on the processing of the edge, this fabric will be hidden by the lower base or will itself be the lower base. Think over the design of the product in advance in order to rationally choose the basis. I use cotton fabrics that are dense enough, pre-washed and ironed (calico, poplin, cotton).
- Fabric for "ottomans" - from it we will cut out the top of the seat - ottomans themselves. I use cotton fabrics that are dense enough, pre-washed and ironed (calico, poplin, cotton).
- Fabric on the lower base (if needed), in our case needed.I use cotton fabrics that are dense enough, pre-washed and ironed (calico, poplin, cotton).
- Hollofayber (sintepukh) for stuffing of padded stools.
- Satin ribbon for decor.
- Ruler, pencil or soap, sheet for constructing a picture of the future product, safety pins, scissors, thread, sewing machine.
The very first stage of work is to think over the drawing for the future product and sketch it out on paper based on the number of “puffs” in length and width.
After that, we cut out this very basis and the bottom of the finished product (if it is needed by design) exactly the same as the base.
The second stage is lining the base. Attention! If the base does not have a square shape (for example, a chair with a trapezoid-shaped seat), when drawing the base, keep the symmetrical arrangement of the ottomans relative to the vertical middle of the product! If it's not entirely clear how to do this, experiment on a piece of paper.
Next, we cut out "ottomans" based on the selected pattern and the shape of the base. If the base is lined withthe sameelements, then the elements of the ottomans will be the same in size, but if in our case, the base is drawn ondifferentthe size of the elements, then you need to cut outrelevantbased ottomans.
The size of the workpiece for the ottoman, I take on the basis of the following calculation: the width of the element on the basis of + 1.5 cm per allowance (0.75 on both sides) + 2 cm per folds for volume. The height of the elements for the puffin is also calculated.
After cutting, I lay out the elements into the intended drawing, I see that all the elements are in their places (color, size), and proceed with their grinding in horizontal rows. Shovchiku ironing out. When all the "tapes" are ready, proceed to making the cover!
Using pins, we prick the top (first) tape onto the base, face up. At the same time combine the seams on the tape with lines on the base. It turns out like this:
We sew the top, laying simultaneously symmetrical folds on the ottomans. I do bantovy, there are technicians where they make one big fold, but this is someone you like. We also sew vertical seams - we share our "ottomans", also laying folds.
It turned out voluminous pockets - the top row of ottomans. These pockets are filled uniformly with holofiber, so that they are approximately the same in density.Attention! When stuffing, the base “shrinks” and the finished product turns out to be less than planned, so increase the base before opening! For the finished product 40 * 40 cm, I make the base 45 * 45 cm (excluding seam allowances).
We pin the tape for the second row of ottomans to the received pockets - the wrong side up (top of the second row to the bottom of the first one, this is important if you are gradually expanding the base, as in our case). Combine the seams of the first and second rows and fasten with pins.
After stitching the horizontal row, laying the folds at the same time on the first and second rows.
We turn away the second row and form the second row of pockets with the help of safety pins - we combine the vertical seams on the ribbon with the lines on the base (leaving 0.75 cm for the allowances). Stitching pockets, as we did with the first row, and fill them.
Similarly, the second row is consumed by tritium, the fourth and fifth (or more, if you have more by drawing).
We grind the edge of the last row of ottomans with the base, laying folds. The result was a base with a raw edge.
Next, we treat the edge with ryush from a tape, ryush from fabric or just with a edging.And we sew on the bottom (we just fold the blank with the front and bottom and sew it, turn it over and iron it with a corner of the iron), if you need it!
If you need to attach to the chair (rubber bands, ties), then think in advance at what stage it will be more convenient to sew them. I usually sew at the moment of connection of the bottom and the base or sew separately, at the very end, if the function of the bottom is performed by the fabric base.

This is what the back side of the product looks like when the base serves simultaneously as the bottom. Accordingly, we select the lower thread in the color of the base and carefully trim all the threads. Immediately shows the edging and strings:

In the same technique, you can make blankets, blankets, mattresses, rugs and everything your heart desires. For example, I used to sew a blanket on an extract. Here the bottom at the same time serves as the edging for the product:
