The size of the slate, its varieties, advantages and disadvantages
Today there are two types of this material: flat and wavy. For the arrangement of the roof using only wavy slate; its size allows you to choose the most suitable in length, width, thickness sheets, and the possibility of easy cutting causes a small amount of waste. Today, many enterprises are engaged in the manufacture of slate, while not all of them comply with the requirements of GOST, many adhere to their own technical specifications (TU). Therefore, differences in standards can be observed. Russian GOST defines 2 types of wavy slate:
- with a wave height of 40 mm and a pitch of 150 mm (grade 40/150);
- with a wave height of 54 mm and a step of 200 mm (grade 54/200).
According to the thickness of the profile sheets of slate are classified as unified, ordinary and reinforced. The first type is distinguished by the smallest sheet thickness of 5.8 mm with a width of 1.125 m and a length of 1.75 m. The second type of sheet has a length of 1.12 m, a width of 0.98 m with a thickness of 6.5-7 mm.The third type of slate is characterized by a sheet width of 1 m, a length of 2.8 m, and a thickness of 8 mm. Unified and ordinary slate profile is used in residential construction, reinforced - in industrial.
The size of the slate depends on the number of waves: for example, a seven-wave sheet has a width of 0.98 m with a wave spacing of 150 mm, eight-wave - 1.13 m. With an overlap of 16 cm, the useful area of a sheet with 7 waves will be 1.336 sq. m, from the 8th - 1.57 square meters. m. Rare, but still used in the construction of sheets with the 5th and 6th waves: with a wave step of 200 mm, the width of the six-wave sheet will be 1,125 m. The narrow sheets are characterized by high frost resistance and resistance to bending deformations.
Pros and cons of slate
The main advantage is relatively high strength at low cost. Slate is considered a fire-resistant material, it does not heat up when the weather is sunny, does not corrode and has a high level of noise insulation. This material does not conduct electricity and is easily replaced in case of damage.
Serious disadvantages of slate include the presence in its composition of asbestos, harmful to humans. Of the operational disadvantages, there is a large weight, which complicates the installation of the roof, and the fragility of the material that requires careful handling during transportation.Many consider the lack of relatively high adhesion of slate, which in a few years can be covered with moss. However, this can be prevented if the finished roof is pre-treated with primer compounds: such a procedure will increase the water-repellent properties and extend the service life of slate.
