Fancy diets have been at all times, especially a couple of centuries ago, and only recently have they become more reasonable, because they are composed by real experts. Let's find out what diet was at the peak of popularity in the year of your birth.

2000

18 years ago, a diet that everyone called “Subway” was popular. A student at Indiana University Jared Vogl weighed 193 kilograms, and this weight spoiled his health and complicated his life. Then he decided to change his lifestyle and came up with a diet: he went to Subway, ordered an 18-centimeter turkey sandwich for lunch and a sandwich with vegetables for dinner. After a year of such a power system, he lost 111 pounds. After the fast-food restaurant management learned about this, Jared was invited to star in an advertisement and tell his story.

No wonder that later everyone sat down on sandwiches, in which there is no mayonnaise and butter, and tried to lose weight.

1996 – 2000

Is it possible by blood type to determine which foods you can eat and which not? There is no scientific evidence of this, but this did not stop the naturopathic doctor Peter D’Adamo to publish the book “4 blood groups - 4 lifestyles”. He tried to prove that people with different blood groups are directly related to the evolutionary process, so they should feed exactly as their ancestors (I blood group is the oldest, people with such a blood group are “hunters”; II group are “farmers” and vegetarians; III - "nomads"; IV - chameleons). In the late 90s, more than 7 million people purchased the book worldwide.

1995

Biochemist Barry Sears in 1995 published the book "Health Zone", which told about the zonal diet. Its essence lies in the separation of proteins into blocks, as well as the observance of their ratios at each meal: 30 percent - proteins, 30 percent - saturated fats, 40 percent - simple carbohydrates. Even Madonna, Renee Zellweger and Demi Moore were delighted with this diet.

1994

This year in America they published a book by Dean Ornish “Eat more and lose weight”.In it, the nutritionist said that it is worth forgetting about counting calories and starting to count the amount of fat you eat. If the fat is less than 10 percent per day, then the process of losing weight is started. Optimal foods that should be included in the diet: whole unprocessed foods such as fruits, vegetables, greens, legumes, and cereals.

1993

It seems that this year absolutely everyone was obsessed with Phen375 “miracle pills”. They helped to lose weight very quickly, but were not at all safe. In 1997, these pills were banned because they caused heart valve disease.

Dr. Atkins published the book "Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution," in which it was a low-carb diet. In his opinion, it was this diet that provided an improvement in metabolism - more calories were consumed for burning fat, respectively, a person loses weight faster.

1991

This year there was a real boom in low-fat products. This food system assumed the use only of low-fat products - lean meat, vegetables, eggs, low-fat cottage cheese and yogurt. Even MCDonald’s has made a beef burger that is 91 percent fat free.

1989−1990

In one of her shows in 1989, Oprah Winfrey said that she lost weight thanks to a liquid diet. After her miraculous transformation, all the girls began to adhere to this particular system of nutrition. It lies in the fact that you need to eat only liquid food, for example: a decoction of oatmeal, juice from vegetables, meat broth from lean meat. However, it can be observed no more than a week, since then the stomach begins to lazy.

1988

Elizabeth Taylor publishes a self-help book entitled “Elizabeth Takes Off,” and, naturally, all women do everything they can to live just like her. The secret of her perfect figure? Eat raw vegetables, but sometimes let yourself relax and eat what you dreamed of, such as fried chicken. For motivation, she even hung up the most terrible picture of herself on her fridge - she was a reminder of what she would be like if she quit the diet.

1986−1987

A new book titled "Fit for Life" claims that perhaps weight loss is not what you eat, but when you eat. The authors Harvey and Marilyn Diamond have put forward the theory of product compatibility: if there are certain products wrong, then they become harmful, and you get fat, that is, you get better becausethat eat protein and starchy foods. Diamonds advise eating only one “concentrated” product at a time.

Celebrities such as Valerie Bertinelli, Mariah Carey and Kirsty-Ellie have been involved in nutrition campaigns for many years, and she still remains one of the most recognizable slimming brands.

1982−1983

A new diet pill, called Dexatrim, has been an indispensable tool for weight loss in many women. It contained antiedematous phenylpropanolamine (PPA) and amphetamine-like ephedra.The formula remained unchanged until 2000, until scientists found a link between diet pills and an increased risk of stroke (like many other diet pills).

The book "The Beverly Hills Diet" was published in 1981 and immediately became a bestseller. The bottom line was that followers of the diet could only eat fruit during the first 10 days. After 10 days, allowed oil, bread and corn. Squirrels like steak were not allowed until the 19th day.

1980

Ayds, an appetite suppressant, was a popular slimming product in the late 1970s and early 1980s. With an unfortunate name, they quickly disappeared from the shelves after the crisis at the beginning of the decade.

1979

Although it was founded two years earlier, Slim Fast began taking dietary dressing in 1979. Mixed with milk, cream and sweet cocktails were supposed to replace both breakfast and lunch.

1978

The best-selling book, The Complete Skarsdale Medical Diet, was published in 1978 and has been incredibly popular among women. Dr. Hermann Tarnauer's low carbohydrate Mediterranean diet was in demand among women until the 1980s.

1977

The Sleeping Beauty diet was widely heard, because Elvis Presley loved her.The meaning of the diet was that the patient slept for several days in a row (of course, thanks to sleeping pills), and since he is sleeping, it means that he does not eat. Many doctors and nutritionists called it very dangerous to health: in addition to problems with sleep and the nervous system, the risk of death was very high.

1976

The book "Diet - Last Chance" was released by Dr. Robert Lynn in the 1970s. Although it became popular years later (he earned $ 40 million from sales of books and his products). However, the Food and Drug Administration intervened in its business after 30 followers of the diet died. The concept: drink something called “Proline” - a high-protein drink made from leftovers from a slaughterhouse, such as cow skin and tendons.

1975

After the development of heart disease at the age of 42, Nathan Pritikin became the pioneer of a low-sodium, heart-carbohydrate, low-fat diet. In 1975, he opened the Pritikin Longevity Center in Florida, where patients could stay for several weeks, following his plan and losing weight.
