When the uterus becomes normal size after the baby is born

During pregnancy and childbirth, the female body undergoes serious changes, and it takes time to recover and return to its former state. In the postpartum period, the hormonal background of the young mother changes, the internal organs change their position, and the uterus begins to contract. The process of complete recovery after childbirth lasts from 2 to 4 months.

How does the reduction occur?

The uterus begins to shrink immediately after the baby is born and shrinks back to normal size already at 4-5 weeks of the baby's life. The hormone oxytocin, which is produced in a woman during childbirth, is directly involved in normalizing the size of the uterus. It is oxytocin that causes contractions of smooth muscles and helps push the baby out of the uterus and afterbirth. If a woman has given birth to a baby through cesarean section, she is given oxytocin injections to compensate for his deficiency during the birth period.
After childbirth, the woman increases and swells the breast, it produces colostrum, and after a while milk appears. The breast sucking process also stimulates the production of oxytocin, which is why many women experience pain in the lower abdomen while nursing. The earlier a child is applied to the breast, the more effectively the uterus is reduced. In nursing mothers, the bottom of the uterus falls daily to a centimeter, acquiring a normal height in 7-8 weeks.

Postpartum discharge

Shortly before the birth, the weight of the uterus reaches 1.5 kg, and immediately after the birth - about 1 kg. After the exit of the placenta, the uterine wall is a wound surface that takes time to heal. Already on the first day after birth, a woman notices copious bloody discharge, the intensity exceeding the amount of discharge during menstruation. These secretions are called lochia, and they also reduce the size of the uterus. After 5-6 weeks, the discharge becomes scanty, their color fades, and gradually they disappear completely. The weight of the uterus in this period is 50-60 g.
The size of the neck and internal pharynx also return to normal. If a woman gave birth on her own, this would take more time. If the birth was operative, the cervix will quickly return to its original state. The cervical canal is restored 10-15 days after delivery. The outer throat of the uterus in women who gave birth independently closes in a month. At this time, a woman can already resume sex life using appropriate contraceptive methods.
