Why Every Good Home Should Have a Few Succulents

A part of me always figured that I’d start getting obsessed with plants and gardening eventually, but for some reason I thought it would happen later in life rather than in my early twenties. It just goes to show that, while once kind of feral, I’m now almost fully domesticated, and the plants have been a huge part of that. People who know me well laugh when I say I’ve been really into plants, and then appear crestfallen when they realize I’m not joking.

I won’t know until spring if my ferns and hydrangeas have properly taken root outside, but in the meantime I’m fully preoccupied with succulents. They require little to no maintenance aside from a bit of water here and there, and they’re soft and friendly to the touch.

They’re versatile and adaptable to almost any lifestyle; you can keep them indoors or outdoors, so long as they’ve got light. I like to keep mine inside, namely in my bedroom, where I can admire them as I get dressed in the morning and fuss over their basic needs before I go to bed at night.

We can’t have pets in our building (except, apparently, a mouse here and there—#ugh), and I’m not ready—like, I’m opposite of ready—to reproduce, so the plants have become a really positive, healthy thing for me to fixate on.

I feel more responsible, given that I am fostering a life (but really, doplants respond to pain?), and it also deludes me into believing I am some kind of earth mother, which believe me, I am not. Seriously, ask anyone.

You can find succulents at just about any gardening store, but I love to order things on the Internet which is why I’m partial to things like this (). All I need is a few good echeveria and a glossy white ceramic planter, and it’s like I’m transported to another world in which I have a green thumb, a level head, and do things like weave on a loom for fun. Dreams, baby, dreams.
